How I Discovered Crystals

Updated: 2 days ago

By Carmela Ruggiero

Sometimes the things we're drawn to only make sense much later.

There was a time when I never imagined crystals would become such an important part of my creative and spiritual journey.

Like many people, I admired them because they were beautiful. Their colours, textures and unique shapes fascinated me, but I didn't really understand what they were or why so many people spoke about the energy they carried.

For this month's blog, I'd like to share my own story. It isn't a lesson on crystals or a guide to choosing the "right" one. It's simply my personal experience, and perhaps, somewhere within it, you may recognise something of your own journey too.

The First Crystals That Chose Me

My very first collection of crystals came from a visit to the Psychic College in London.

I remember walking around and being completely captivated by the display. There were so many different crystals, each one sparkling in its own unique way. I didn't know their names, what they represented or what they were supposed to do. I simply found myself drawn to a handful of them.

Looking back, I realise I wasn't choosing them with my mind. I was choosing them with something much quieter.

With my intuition.

Before leaving, I asked if someone could photograph the little labels beside each crystal so that I could remember what they were. The crystals were carefully wrapped, packed away and brought home with me.

I was excited.

But I was also a little uncertain.

Hidden Away

What happened next still makes me smile.

Those beautiful crystals stayed in a cupboard for almost two years.

Partly because life became busy and I simply forgot about them.

But if I'm completely honest, there was another reason.

I had heard so many people talk about the powerful energy of crystals that I felt a little cautious. I remember thinking, "If they really do carry this much energy, perhaps I'd better leave them safely where they are until I understand them a little better."

So there they remained, quietly waiting.

Perhaps they knew I wasn't quite ready yet.

The Right Time Arrives

A couple of years later, I joined a small online metaphysical group with a wonderful teacher.

Although the group wasn't specifically about crystals, she worked with them naturally and spoke about them with such kindness and knowledge that my fear slowly disappeared.

There was no pressure.

No complicated rules.

Just gentle encouragement to become familiar with them.

One day I remembered the forgotten bag sitting in the cupboard.

I brought it downstairs, opened it carefully and held each crystal in my hands for the first time in years.

That moment felt surprisingly emotional.

It was almost as though I was meeting old friends I had forgotten about.

As I held them, I noticed a warmth that I hadn't expected. Some seemed to feel heavier than others. Some felt comforting. Others seemed to carry a subtle vibration that I found difficult to explain.

Whether that was imagination, energy or simply my own awareness becoming more present didn't really matter.

What mattered was how they made me feel.

That was enough.

Learning Slowly

I didn't rush to memorise every crystal or try to become an expert overnight.

Instead, I allowed myself to learn gradually.

Whenever I felt curious about one particular crystal, I would simply read about that one.

Over time I began to notice something interesting.

The crystals I felt most drawn to often reflected exactly what was happening in my life.

If I needed calm, I seemed to discover a crystal associated with peace.

If I was working through emotional healing, another crystal naturally appeared.

I wasn't searching for them.

They simply seemed to arrive when I was ready.

That has happened too many times for me to ignore.

People often ask me, "Which crystal should I buy?"

My answer is always the same.

I don't think anyone else can truly answer that for you.

Books are wonderful.

Teachers are wonderful.

Learning is wonderful.

But your own intuition is an incredible guide.

If you ever visit a crystal shop, take your time.

Don't immediately read all the labels or search online for the "best" crystal.

Simply walk around.

Notice which one catches your eye.

Which one seems to sparkle just a little brighter than the rest.

If you're able to, hold it gently in your hand.

Notice how it feels.

You may not understand why you're attracted to it.

That's perfectly okay.

Sometimes understanding comes later.

Looking back, when I think about those first crystals sitting quietly in my cupboard for two years, I can't help but smile.

At the time, I thought I was waiting until I was ready.

Now I wonder if perhaps they were patiently waiting for me instead.

Life has a wonderful way of bringing the right things to us at exactly the right moment.

Sometimes we simply need to slow down enough to notice.

Thank you for spending a little time with me today.

In my next blog, I'll share how crystals taught me to trust my intuition rather than relying on rules, and why I believe the crystal that calls to you is often the one you need most.

Until then, take care of yourself, stay curious, and allow yourself to notice the little moments of guidance that life quietly places along your path.

With love,

Carmela
